Abstract

This study examines motion graphics design and GIF art within the context of visual communication and focuses on the narrative and communicative functions that the GIF format assumes in contemporary digital culture. In the literature, GIF (Graphics Interchange Format) is defined as a short and looped digital image format without audio content and is generally evaluated in terms of its technical features and its role within digital sharing culture. However, studies focusing on the visual narrative capacity of GIFs and their aesthetic and communicative potential within the context of motion graphics are limited. This research seeks to address this gap by conceptualizing the GIF format as a mode of visual expression that generates micro-narratives.

Employing a qualitative research design with a descriptive analysis approach, this study examines ten GIF samples selected from The Simpsons animated series, which were chosen for their visual density, distinct use of facial expressions and gestures, symbolic narrative language, and social critique. The selected samples were evaluated in terms of their looped structure, visual composition, body language, humor, and message transmission potential. The findings indicate that, through their brief and repetitive structures, GIFs are capable of conveying emotions, irony, and layers of critical meaning within a condensed visual narrative. In this respect, the study demonstrates that the GIF format can be considered not merely as a digital sharing object but as an alternative field of expression within the context of motion graphics design.
