Abstract

Hans Holbein, a German-born Renaissance painter, is especially renowned for his portrait artistry and is regarded as one of the leading artists of his era due to his attention to detail, realism, and symbolic narrative power. As the official painter of the Tudor Court, Holbein skillfully utilized elements in his art to reflect the identities and social statuses of individuals. His meticulous craftsmanship allowed the jewelry depicted in his portraits to serve not only as aesthetic embellishments but also as symbols of social hierarchy, political allegiance, and cultural identity. By carefully rendering these elements, Holbein transformed the artistic, political, and social framework of the Renaissance into a visual narrative.

This article aims to examine the significance of jewelry and adornments in Hans Holbein's portraits as tools of historical, social, and symbolic expression, beyond their aesthetic appeal. The study analyzes how Holbein's detailed and realistic artistic approach reflects the symbolic functions of jewelry in his portraits. The valuable jewels depicted in the portraits of Tudor royalty and nobles—such as the Tudor Rose, Chains of Office, and S-shaped collars—illustrate how adornments served as visual expressions of identity and social status rather than merely decorative accessories. Holbein's works act as a guide for understanding the role of Renaissance art in communicating individuals' social, religious, and political identities.

This study is limited to ten portraits selected from Hans Holbein’s known 153 works, focusing on those that most prominently feature jewelry with high levels of detail and significance. Since jewelry is generally less prominent or noticeable in other portraits, the selected examples were carefully chosen to best represent the scope of this research, emphasizing compositions where adornments play a significant role.

In this context, the study investigates the identity and status expressions conveyed through jewelry in Holbein's portraits using qualitative research methods, specifically a descriptive research approach, supported by an extensive literature review.
