Abstract

Graphic design is used extensively on digital platforms as an effective communication tool for making social issues visible, expressing social and political demands, and in digital activism practices. With the widespread use of digital communication environments, the ways in which these channels are used are also transforming, and graphic design is being used as a visual communication tool in digital activism. Today, digital activism plays an important role in making global issues such as climate crisis, inequality, democratic rights, and migration visible. This research aims to reveal the visual narrative language of graphic design products used within the scope of digital activism by examining the use of symbols, metaphors, and colors, and by uncovering the strategies of these designs in generating meaning, universalizing the message, and establishing rapid communication with the audience. This study examines visual content from TheGreats.co, a platform that offers visual content related to climate, equality, freedom and democracy, and migration. Designed within the framework of qualitative research, the study utilized visual content analysis and analyzed a total of twenty-four visual themes selected through purposive sampling, focusing on color usage, symbolism, and visual metaphors. The analysis revealed that the symbols used in the visuals are largely internationally recognized signs that can produce similar meanings across different cultural contexts. This facilitates the reach of graphic design products produced within the scope of digital activism to wider audiences and supports the rapid perception of the message. It can be argued that the use of universal symbols is a significant element that increases the visibility and impact of digital activist discourse.
